I see that J1.6 removes "Sections" (or is it Categories; I think it's Sections) to streamline web design. After working with J1.5 for a while, I can see some value in that.

Does anyone have any thoughts on whether it makes sense to stop using Sections in your J1.5 site, to make the upgrade transition easier?

If they remove Sections, what does that do to Categories? Do they disappear too? Anyone looked into this yet and have any advice?

I know nothing specific about J1.6, but J1.6 will undoubtedly evolve in the direction of K2 and Drupal, giving you more flexibility in how items are grouped and tagged.

No, you do not want to "stop using sections" on your 1.5 site. (How could you anyway?) I'd expect J1.6 to map your old sections and categories to its new structures as part of the upgrade process, like the K2 component does now as part of its installation process; so none of your content organization will be lost.

I did a little more research and found this information:

"In Joomla 1.6, sections are gone. Now the only thing we have is categories. The greatest thing about this is that you can nest the categories. This means you can create a hierarchy of categories. Each category can have one parent category, but one category may have unlimited child categories.

There is no limit to the number of levels in the hierarchy. I doubt that anyone would need to have more than three or four levels, though. Adding more levels might also have some negative impact on your search engine visibility."

The New Article menu will also have a new listing called "List All Categories" in addition to the standard "Category Blog," and "Category List."

It would make sense if during the transition from 1.5 to 1.6, Joomla! automatically changed each current Section into a Category and the current Categories that were in that Section were nested automatically beneath the new Category. I hope it'll work that way!
